A man was seriously injured after being shot by U.S. Border Patrol agents near the U.S.-Mexico border in Arizona, the local sheriff's office said.

The man is said to be the first to open fire on federal border police officers as they searched for a criminal suspect on Tuesday, local time.

The officers then allegedly returned fire, injuring the man. His condition is said to be serious but stable.

It is the latest in a series of high-profile shootings involving federal police in the United States, including the fatal shootings of mother-of-three Renee Nicole Good and nurse Alex Pretti.
