The man was hit in the lower body and taken to hospital with unknown injuries. He was conscious at the time, police said.

"I don't know his condition right now," said police spokesman Wayne Seretis.

The man has been arrested on suspicion of a crime. The police officers involved have been removed from duty.

The police do not want to comment on what prompted the shooting and say the incident is being investigated by prosecutors and the police department for special investigations. The police also do not want to comment on the classification of the crime.

It's too early in the investigation. The crime classification may change, Seretis says.

The alarm about the incident was received at 6:49 p.m. on Sunday.
