"The man has admitted to killing the woman and his confession is strongly supported by the rest of the investigation. Therefore, he is convicted of the murder. Since the district court makes the assessment that the man suffers from a serious mental disorder and did so at the time of the crime, the sentence is set to forensic psychiatric care," says the court's chairman Anna Avenberg in a press release.

He will also have to pay damages of over 650,000 kronor to the woman's relatives.

It was on the evening of January 7 that the man attacked a 60-year-old female employee at the supermarket and stabbed her in the neck. The woman was seriously injured and later died at the hospital.

Admitted directly

The investigation has not been able to find any connection between the man and the victim, and he appears to have randomly selected her.

The 26-year-old was arrested at the store by security guards. The knife he used was also seized. The man confessed to the crime on the spot.

The man is said to have felt very unwell at the time. He has had some contact with psychiatry and suffered from depression and catastrophic thoughts, according to the verdict from Södertörn District Court.

Bought the murder weapon

He bought the knife at a nearby store, and in the interrogation, he stated that he planned to use it to take his own life, but he couldn't bring himself to carry out the act.

At Ica Maxi, the female store employee asked if he needed help. He then became so angry that he stabbed her with the knife. Killing the woman would also make it easier for him to take his own life, he has said.
