During the New Year's celebration in Södertälje, a firework exploded on the ground and injured a boy so badly that he later died. Now a man in his 30s is being sentenced for gross negligence leading to another's death.

The powerful firework had been placed up and down in the pipe that was used and was not shot up in the air, but instead exploded on the ground.

The Södertälje district court notes that a lot went wrong in the incident: the wrong type of pipe was used and the man lacked both training and permission to fire the firework.

”The virtually complete lack of safety distance has, however, been such an obvious mistake that even a person without the right training must have understood that it exposed other people to mortal danger”, says the court's chairman Jonas Brunberg in a press release.

The man is also convicted of reckless endangerment and a crime against the law on fire-hazardous and explosive goods. The sentence will be one and a half years in prison.
