The U.S. Department of Homeland Security says ICE was monitoring an address in the city of Biddeford where a man with a deportation order was located. When a vehicle attempted to leave the scene and failed to stop, an officer fired his weapon “in the interest of public safety,” according to the department’s account.

It is unclear whether the man who was shot was the person the operation was targeting. Maine Senator Angus King said after contacting authorities that this was not the case, according to CNN.

The man who was shot was later identified by human rights groups as a 26-year-old from Colombia.

This is the second time in a week that ICE has used deadly force in connection with an operation.
