The now 51-year-old man killed the woman by drowning her in an opening in the ice, according to the indictment.

He denies any wrongdoing.

It was in January 2015 that the 39-year-old mother of two was found dead in a cove in Sigtunafjärden after she was reported missing by a worried friend.

The woman's husband was arrested shortly after she was found, but he was released after a month when there was not enough evidence to hold him. Just over a year later, the investigation was closed.

New interrogations

But in late 2024, the police cold case unit took up the incident and found grounds to investigate further. The man was re-arrested in October last year on probable cause.

"There are several different things that have been re-investigated. Among other things, we interviewed people who had not been heard in 2015 and held supplementary interviews with people who were heard then," says prosecutor Vida Paridad.

"We have also looked at a lot of digital evidence. We re-examined old devices and brought in new ones, including mobile phones and computers. Today we have greater opportunities to examine extensive material than we had over ten years ago," she continues.

How does it feel to be able to prosecute someone after so long?

"I'm just doing my job, and so are the police. It's important that cold cases exist and that we have the opportunity to look at cases again."

Lied about cancer

According to the indictment, the couple had been separated for some time. She had moved in with a new man and the couple had recently filed for divorce; she initiated the proceedings. The suspect is said to have been mentally ill after the separation and tried to lie to the woman about having incurable cancer, according to the interviews.

At their last meeting, she allegedly tried to persuade him to sign property division papers.

The murder suspect is also charged with drug offenses, as he is alleged to have grown and possessed mushrooms and cannabis.
