The alarm came just before 5:30 p.m. on Thursday from a swimming area outside Hestra.
He was reportedly in the company of other people who saw him go into the water, says police spokesperson Martina Gradian.
Both divers and a helicopter were used in the search.
At 7 p.m., the man was found in the water and taken to hospital by ambulance helicopter, according to police. Relatives have been notified.
