We are handling the incident as a traffic accident without suspicion of crime, says Elin Andersson, the police's press spokesperson in region Nord.
Two people were in the car, one of them could, according to the police, get up on the road after the accident. The other person, an older man, was taken to hospital by ambulance, but his life could not be saved.
Two dogs were also in the car.
They have been taken to a veterinarian and are being examined there. They seem to have made it, says Andersson.
The accident occurred on Sunday morning on county road 738 in Årsta in Härnösands municipality, after the heavy rainstorm that hit the area washed away part of the road.
In video clips from SVT Västernorrland, it was seen how several meters of the road were completely destroyed and swallowed up in the crack with a depth of approximately five meters.
It was a larger road hole that gave up so it became a big hole. And just when the car came and drove, everything cracked, said Jan Norberg, team leader at the rescue service, to TT on Sunday.
