Armed Man Who Blocked Belgian Highway After Crash Surrenders to Police

A man who blocked a highway in eastern Belgium, prompting evacuations, has surrendered to police, Belgian media report.

The man was reportedly involved in a car accident on Saturday morning on the highway between Liège and Luxembourg. He then allegedly claimed to be armed and to have explosives, RTBF reports, citing local authorities. The man is reportedly a police officer by profession.

The incident caused a major stir, with police cordoning off the area and evacuating motorists. The mayor of the nearby town of Sprimont also announced that a crisis response had been activated.

After police negotiated with the man, he eventually gave up and turned himself in. He is now in custody and will be questioned, according to Belgian media.
