A man in his 30s is sentenced by Falu District Court to 18 years in prison for the murder of a man in Borlänge.

The victim, a 75-year-old man, was found dead near his home in late May this year. The man now convicted was arrested the same day. According to local media, the victim was a former police officer in Dalarna.

The men did not know each other before and, according to the verdict, the man went to the victim's home to steal his car, but was discovered and a confrontation ensued. The perpetrator then allegedly hit the victim in the head with a hammer about ten times.

According to SVT Dalarna, the convicted man was well known to the police, and relatives of the man have, for a long time, alerted social services and psychiatry with a plea for the man to be taken into care.

After the murder, Borlänge Municipality reported itself to Lex Sarah and started an internal investigation.
