The man is suspected of, among other things, attempted murder, preparation for murder, serious weapons offenses and serious narcotics offenses, writes the Prosecution Authority in a press release.
"My message to serious criminals hiding abroad is clear and straightforward: Now we're taking you, one by one. This is just the beginning," writes Minister of Justice Gunnar Strömmer (The Moderate Party) in a comment to TT.
The man is described as a key figure in the criminal Foxtrot network and is suspected of being behind a number of serious violent crimes in Sweden between January and April 2023.
Arrested in 2023
The suspicions include, among other things, three cases of preparation for murder in Stockholm and Sundsvall and two attempted murders in Sundsvall, as well as conspiracy to commit murder, conspiracy to commit serious weapons offenses and incitement to attempt to cause public destruction.
In one of the crimes, on January 21, 2023, two 15-year-old boys were instructed to go to Enskededalen in southern Stockholm and shoot anyone wearing an expensive jacket or Gucci hat. When they spotted a young man who fit the description, they opened fire. The victim, who has no connection to crime, escaped the bullets.
A then 20-year-old man was later sentenced to 18 years in prison for having persuaded a total of five boys between 14 and 15 years old to commit similar violent crimes three days in a row on behalf of Foxtrot leader Rawa Majid.
The now extradited Foxtrot leader was arrested in Iraq in the fall of 2023 after being internationally wanted and has been detained since then.
He will be heard today, says prosecutor Henrik Söderman to TT.
Hundreds arrested
Earlier in October, Sweden and Iraq signed an agreement focusing on combating cross-border organized crime.
So far this year, 210 people have been arrested abroad since they were wanted, according to the police. A "significant proportion" is what Gunnar Strömmer describes as prioritized actors, with some belonging to "the real top layer" of Swedish criminals.
Just over a week ago, the alleged leader of the Dalen network, Mikael "Greken" Tenezos, was extradited from Mexico. Since July, gang leader Ismail "Jordgubben" Abdo has been detained in Turkey.
"In a short time, several gang criminals with significant influence on crime in Sweden have been arrested in several countries through international cooperation," writes Deputy National Police Commissioner Stefan Hector in a press release.
