The performance premieres on August 14 and is initially intended to run for half a year, but the musical's producer Judy Craymer is open to an extension.

I hope we can either come back or extend, she says to the newspaper.

"Mamma mia", which is based on the Swedish supergroup's songs, is one of the most profitable musicals of all time. After its premiere in London in 1999, it came to New York where it played 5,773 times between 2001 and 2015. Only eight other performances have been played more times on Broadway.

The musical has been set up in 16 different languages and has generated $7 billion in revenue.

"Mamma mia" has also been the basis for two films and Judy Craymer tells the New York Times that she hopes there will be a third. But so far, no concrete plans have been presented.
