"When I have now made the decision to put the shoes on the shelf, I look back on my career with pride and gratitude", he writes in an open letter on MFF's website.
In recent years, Tinnerholm has been plagued by injury problems, where he only played three Allsvenskan matches last season and only four the season before.
"These two years did not become what I had hoped for in terms of football. But I have felt fantastic support from everyone in the association and the city", he writes.
Tinnerholm joined Malmö in the summer of 2014 and won five Swedish championships, one Swedish Cup title, and was part of the team that played in the Champions League group stage in 2014-2015 and 2015-2016. This in 146 competitive matches.
He has also played nine national team matches for Sweden.
