After 4–1 in the away match against RFS from Latvia, MFF had a secure starting position before tonight's return match at Eleda Stadion.
And it didn't take long before the team showed that nothing would go wrong. Sead Haksabanovic hit on his own return and scored 1–0 after just over 20 minutes, 5–1 overall, which also became the final result.
Malmö made a number of changes in the eleven from the weekend's Allsvenskan win against Brommapojkarna. Pontus Jansson was back in the central defense, Oliver Berg stepped in centrally and Haksabanovic got the chance from the start. Isaac Kiese Thelin, recently sick, was still outside the squad.
MFF's victory means not only advancement to the third qualifying round – but also a secured group play in European competition in the fall. The loser in the third qualifying round of the Champions League drops down to the Europa League playoff, where the loser drops down to the group stage of the Europa Conference League.
But above all: now awaits a scorching hot double meeting against FC Copenhagen, who on Tuesday knocked out Drita from Kosovo.
The Öresund derby begins with kickoff at Eleda Stadion on August 5 and the return match at Parken in Copenhagen on August 12.
