Malmö FF marches on in the hunt for Champions League. The Swedish champions had no problem defeating Latvian RFS in Riga, and have given themselves an excellent position ahead of the qualifying return match next week.

MFF easily advanced from the first qualifying round to the Champions League, where Georgian FC Iberia was defeated with a total of 6–2.

Now a tougher opponent was waiting in the form of the champions from Latvia, RFS.

When the starting lineups were released, it became clear that MFF coach Henrik Rydström made three changes compared to the win against Öster on Saturday. Jens Stryger, Oliver Berg, and Taha Ali took a place in the starting lineup, while Adrian Skogmar, Kenan Busuladzic, and Daniel Gudjohnsen had to start on the bench.

Struck immediately

Already in the 13th minute, Otto Rosengren gave Malmö a dream start. The midfielder stayed forward on a rebound and made it 1–0 after a shot from Sead Haksabanovic.

After 35 minutes, Malmö then expanded their lead. Team captain Pontus Jansson sneaked away in the penalty area and was able to head in a corner undisturbed behind the RFS goalkeeper.

RFS reduced the lead five minutes later when Darko Lemajic won a header duel and steered in a cross.

Can be Copenhagen

In the beginning of the second half, MFF expanded their lead. Haksabanovic appeared at the far post and pressed the ball into the goal. The referee first waved off for offside, but after a video review, the goal was approved and MFF went up to 3–1.

Substitute Lasse Berg Johnsen established the final result to 4–1 from the penalty spot with two minutes left to play.

If MFF advances from the double meeting – which ends at home at Eleda Stadion next Wednesday – it could be a hot Scandinavian meeting against FC Copenhagen in the next qualifying round. Most things indicate that the Danes will knock out KF Drita from Kosovo.

The double meeting began at the same time as Malmö's, and the first match ended 2–0.
