Helstrup comes from the successful Norwegian club Bodø/Glimt, where he was an assistant coach.
Bodø/Glimt became the team everyone in European football was talking about last season when it reached the round of 16 in the Champions League. The team beat both Manchester City and Atletico Madrid in the league phase and then knocked out Inter in the round of 16 before being eliminated.
Helstrup will begin his duties at Malmö FF on Thursday and will lead the team in the Allsvenskan restart on Saturday away against Degerfors.
