The first match against Sigma Olomouc ended 3–0 to Malmö FF. That Malmö would qualify for the European League was thus largely already clear.
Despite this, MFF coach Henrik Rydström fielded a strong starting eleven at Andruv stadium in the Czech Republic.
Already in the second minute, Malmö had a ball on the goal line, but it was not deemed to be in and an early lead was missed. In the 62nd minute, however, an MFF goal came when Daniel Gudjohnsen tapped in a rebound into the net.
In stoppage time, 2–0 also came through Emmanuel Ekong after a fine run in depth.
Qualifying for the European League means that Malmö has secured 4.31 million euros, equivalent to 48 million kronor.
In the matches in the group stage, the Skåne team will be able to secure additional millions. A won match gives five million kronor, a draw 1.7 million.
