President Nicolás Maduro may lack legitimacy - but international law must still be respected, says Foreign Minister Maria Malmer Stenergard (M) in a comment on the events in Venezuela.

Malmer Stenergard said in a written comment that the Ministry of Foreign Affairs is closely following developments in Venezuela, "in consultation with other EU countries."

"Sweden, together with the EU, has previously stated that Nicolás Maduro lacks legitimacy," Malmer Stenergard said, but added:

"However, all states have a responsibility to respect and act in accordance with international law. Respecting international law is a long-term security policy interest for Sweden."

The United States has announced that President Nicolás Maduro and his wife Cilia Flores will be tried on charges of "narco-terrorism."
