The announcement from the military junta in the West African country came after allegations that civilians were killed in an attack earlier in the week. The military attacked two buses in the northern part of Mali, where Tuareg separatist movements are fighting for independence from the government in the Malian capital Bamako.

At least 24 people were killed in the attacks, all civilians according to the Tuareg rebels. The attack was carried out against passengers in two buses that had the neighboring country of Algeria as their destination. Russian mercenaries are also said to have participated in the attack.

The military junta's announcement of an investigation is unlikely to mean anything in practice, according to analysts.

"It is being conducted to counter allegations against the army and the Russian paramilitary Wagner group," says Rida Lyammouri at a think tank in Morocco who is following the development in Mali.

The likely outcome is that they will conclude that the allegations are false.
