The actor Malcolm-Jamal Warner, who played Theo Huxtable in the 1980s series "Cosby", has died in a drowning accident.

Warner, 54, was on a family vacation in Costa Rica and drowned during a swim on Sunday afternoon. According to Costa Rica's judicial authorities, he was swimming at Playa Cocles in the Limon province when he was pulled out to sea by currents.

"He was rescued from the water by people on the beach", according to a first report, but despite first aid efforts from Costa Rica's Red Cross, he showed no signs of life.

Malcolm-Jamal Warner played the role of the only son in the Huxtable family for eight seasons and appeared in all 197 episodes of the comedy series. In 1986, he received an Emmy nomination for best male supporting role in a comedy series.
