The tree in Nottinghamshire, England, has not shed its leaves this year after several years of drought, extreme heat and prolonged human impact.
According to legend, the oak gave shelter to Robin Hood and his followers as they fled the Sheriff of Nottingham, and it has attracted visitors for generations.
Attempts to preserve the oak may also have contributed to its decline. Branches have been supported with metal chains and wooden supports since 1904, and cavities have been filled with concrete. Experts say this has hindered the tree's natural aging process.
Now it is left as dead wood - which is still important for the ecosystem.
