Spanish police have carried out extensive raids against at least seven criminal gangs in the Costa del Sol in the southern part of the country.

Nearly nine tons of drugs have been seized and at least 55 “very violent” people have been arrested, according to the Spanish national police authority on Wednesday. The operation against the criminal gangs has been ongoing for months.

Suspicions are being raised against two of those arrested for involvement in the attempted murder of two Swedish citizens in December last year, AFP reports.

Among those arrested are ten people with French citizenship; they are suspected, among other things, of kidnapping a Moroccan citizen in Marbella last year.

Another French criminal gang is suspected of carrying out violent robberies targeting members of competing criminal gangs.

During the raids, over 8,900 kilograms of hashish and cocaine were seized, as well as 37 weapons and large sums of cash.
