Strong continued the steady play she had shown all week and finished the major, played at Erin Hills in Wisconsin, at a total of -7.
Two strokes behind came top-ranked American Nelly Korda and Japanese Rio Takeda.
I started shaking a bit more than yesterday, it was a bigger challenge today. I tried not to look at the leaderboard and focus on my game, says Stark in connection with receiving the trophy.
23 million kronor
The win means that 25-year-old Stark takes home around 23 million kronor.
Before the competition, Stark had struggled with her confidence, she reveals after the press conference.
Before this week, I was worried that I wouldn't be able to play good golf for a while because it felt like it was so far away. So this feels enormous.
I just stopped trying to control everything, and I just let it happen.
Stark started the final round in the lead with one stroke, and the major title was never directly threatened, despite bogeys on the last two holes. Still, it was nervous at the putt on the 18th hole, she says.
It felt like there was so much that could go wrong. It's going downhill, from right to left, and if I hit it too hard it would just keep rolling. So I was very nervous about that putt. I'm glad I just got it to a "tap-in".
Celebrated with champagne
The other Swedish players Linn Grant and Ingrid Lindblad waited for her with a bottle of champagne to celebrate at the final hole.
Crazy, says Grant about her colleague's performance.
Stark is thus the sixth Swede to win a major. She is the first Swedish woman to win the US Open since Annika Sörenstam did it in 2006. Only one other Swedish woman has done it before: Liselotte Neumann in 1988.
It's so cool. They wrote to me yesterday and told me to take it home, says Stark after the victory.
What will the 25-year-old from Abbekås in Skåne do with the prize money?
Maybe moving out from my one-bedroom apartment. I don't know. I'm very pleased with my life right now.
Just having security, I think I'll be very happy about that.
Linn Grant finished the competition in a tie for ninth, a total of two under par.
