The 23-year-old jumped the farthest, 14.04 metres, in her third attempt, and was two centimetres short of being among those who were allowed three more jumps.

"It's tough. But that's part of it. I'm disappointed, of course," Åskag says with tears in her eyes in the mixed zone.

It didn't work out today and I can't say exactly why.

On Saturday, Åskag will compete again, in the long jump qualifiers at the European Championships.

Even if it sucks now, there's another chance in two days. I have to give myself the conditions to succeed there too. I just have to recharge.

Dariya Derkach of Italy took gold with a jump of 14.60 metres.
