The prize is one of three newly established prizes through which the Academy recognizes the importance of non-fiction in Swedish literature.

The other two, the Swedish Academy's prize for outstanding authors of Swedish non-fiction for children and young people and its essay and criticism prize, are awarded to Stefan Casta and Anders Ekström, respectively.

The prize winners are awarded 100,000 SEK each.
