As a 19-year-old, she beat the Swedish swimming star Sarah Sjöström on 100 meters butterfly in the World Championship and took gold.
Now, Canadian Maggie MacNeil is retiring – as a 24-year-old.
"I'm looking forward to starting the next chapter in my life and discovering who I am outside of swimming", writes MacNeil on Instagram.
MacNeil has gold, silver, and bronze from the Olympic Games in Tokyo, but was left without a podium spot in Paris, writes Swimswam.
