The couple were captured by US soldiers earlier this year in a high-profile operation in Venezuela. Both were taken to the US and are in custody on drug trafficking charges.
The defence now claims that 69-year-old Flores suffers from serious heart problems that require coronary X-rays and possibly surgery. The lawyers believe that the conditions in the detention centre do not allow her to receive adequate care and that she should therefore be placed under house arrest with ankle shackles, 24-hour surveillance and her passport confiscated.
The former presidential couple denies the accusations against them, and Maduro has claimed in court that he is a "prisoner of war" with the United States.
