Venezuela's interim president, Delcy Rodríguez, announces that the release of political prisoners will continue.

"The message is a Venezuela that is entering a new political reality that opens up to understanding despite disagreements and political and ideological differences," Delcy Rodríguez said in a speech at government headquarters in Caracas, the Efe news agency reports.

According to Rodríguez, 406 prisoners have been released so far since the release process began in December.

However, the rights organization Foro Penal states that only around 180 people have been released.

Delcy Rodríguez was vice president under President Nicolás Maduro, who was targeted in a US attack on Venezuela on January 3.

US President Donald Trump, who seeks access to Venezuela's oil, praised Rodríguez after a phone call on Wednesday.

"We discussed a lot of things and I think we get along very well with Venezuela," Trump told reporters in the Oval Office.
