Maduro and his wife Cilia Flores were captured in early January by US forces in a nighttime raid in the Venezuelan capital, Caracas. According to US allegations, Maduro was part of a larger plot to smuggle thousands of tons of cocaine into the United States.
The couple is being held at the Metropolitan Detention Center in Brooklyn. According to a source close to the Venezuelan regime, Maduro reads the Bible daily and is called “president” by some of his fellow prisoners.
The couple face life in prison if the jury finds them guilty of conspiring to smuggle cocaine into the U.S. Both deny the charges.
