The couple were released from Tehran's notorious Evin Prison in November after serving more than three years on charges of espionage. They had been held in Iran until then.

Now they are on their way home, French President Emmanuel Macron says.

"Cécile Kohler and Jacques Paris are free and on their way to France, after three and a half years in Iran," he wrote on X on Tuesday.

According to a source at the French Foreign Ministry, they left Iran at dawn in a convoy with the French ambassador and are currently reported to be in Azerbaijan.
