On the three-year anniversary of Russia's invasion, talks about the war and Ukraine's future are underway on several fronts. A number of heads of state and government are in Kyiv, EU foreign ministers are meeting in Brussels, and France's president is in Washington to meet with Donald Trump.
According to Emmanuel Macron, he will present "action proposals" during the meeting to counter the Russian threat in Europe and secure peace in Ukraine.
Macron hopes to convince Trump to continue American support to Ukraine – and that Russia will not respect a potential ceasefire. The trip comes after Trump sent shockwaves across Europe in recent weeks with his willingness to initiate peace talks with Russia's President Vladimir Putin – seemingly without involving either Ukraine or its European allies.
We have a power that has armed itself all too much and continues to arm itself, said Macron about Russia before departing for Washington.
Today, we do not know where it will end. So we must all act to curb it.
Macron represents Europe as a whole during his US trip.
It is in his (Trump's) interest to work with the Europeans, since Europe has the capacity to grow and an economic potential to cooperate with the Americans, said Macron.
On Thursday, the UK's Prime Minister Keir Starmer will also visit the White House.
