The statements are made in connection with the two leaders meeting in Washington.
We are well aware that Europeans need to do more for security in Europe, for defense in Europe and to more fairly share the burden of security that your country has borne for so many years, says Macron.
He adds that Ukraine "has fought for its independence and sovereignty over the past few years, but also for our collective security".
Macron's trip comes after Trump sent shockwaves over Europe with his willingness to initiate peace talks with Russian President Vladimir Putin – seemingly without involving either Ukraine or the country's European allies.
"Good reasons"
The French president believes that Trump has "good reasons" to re-establish contact with Russian President Vladimir Putin, but states that an agreement on Ukraine must include security guarantees.
Trump does not say whether an agreement will include security guarantees from the USA.
Europe will make sure that nothing happens, he says.
Trump previously stated that Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyj may visit the White House "this or next week". Trump claims that the potential visit is to sign an agreement on Ukrainian minerals. Ukraine has not confirmed the reports.
European forces
According to the American president, Russia is ready to accept European forces in Ukraine as guarantors for an agreement to end the fighting. However, it is unclear which countries they would come from. Macron announces that Europe would be willing to send peacekeeping forces and spend more money on defense.
The meeting between Macron and Trump has previously been described as an attempt to persuade continued American support for Ukraine – and an attempt to get Trump to understand that Russia is a threat to everyone.
Emmanuel Macron said before the meeting that he would present "action proposals" to counter the Russian threat in Europe and secure peace in Ukraine.
