Europe may need to resume contacts with Russia if ongoing negotiations to try to reach a peace in Russia's war in Ukraine fail, that is the message from French President Emmanuel Macron.

"Either a robust and lasting peace is reached with the obligatory security guarantees, or in the coming weeks we will have to find ways for Europe to resume a dialogue with Russia, with complete transparency and in consultation with Ukraine," Macron told reporters in Brussels on Friday.

The comment came after EU leaders agreed to lend 90 billion euros to Ukraine, a step back from the proposal to use frozen Russian assets to finance the loan.

"We, Europeans and Ukrainians, have an interest in finding the right framework to resume the discussions in the right way. Otherwise, we will discuss among ourselves with negotiators who will then discuss with the Russians individually. That is not optimal," Macron said.
