"In a world of crises, our friendship means strength," Macron writes on X and shows a recording of him welcoming Carney to one of the tiny islands.
The meeting takes place against the backdrop of the two countries' strained relationship with the power in the United States, while at the same time having great symbolic value as the archipelago of three islands is France's last territory off the coast of North America.
The islands, with a population of just under 6,000, are located just over 20 miles off Newfoundland. It is the first time in more than a decade that a French president has visited the islands.
"Together, we reaffirm our sovereignty, our freedom to decide and our will to build a future of peace and prosperity," Macron writes in an indirect message to the White House.
