The incident occurred late in the second period, with the score tied at 1-1. Devon Toews was trying to clear the puck from his own goal when it hit MacKinnon in the face as it flew.

The crowd watched the season's top scorer collapse in pain with a bloody face before he was led off the ice. However, the 30-year-old was back in the final period and scored into an empty net to make it 4–2 before Brock Nelson made it 5–2.

Colorado is just one win away from the semifinals.

"There's faith, trust and determination in the locker room, and you're sprinkled with the talent and depth we have... It's a powerful combination. The guys knew what was at stake and how important the game was," said Gabriel Landeskog.
