Surgeon Paolo Macchiarini's application to serve his sentence in Spain has been approved by Spanish authorities, reports Aftonbladet.
The Swedish Prison and Probation Service approved Macchiarini's request for transfer earlier this year.
"Considering that Paolo Macchiarini is deemed to reside in Spain, the Swedish Prison and Probation Service believes that social rehabilitation will be facilitated by serving his sentence in Spain. A transfer is otherwise deemed suitable," it stated in the Swedish Prison and Probation Service's decision.
Macchiarini was sentenced to 2.5 years' imprisonment in the summer of 2023 by the Svea Court of Appeal for three counts of gross assault following operations at Karolinska University Hospital in Solna, where three patients received synthetic tracheas.
All three patients suffered severe complications and died.
Paolo Macchiarini is an Italian citizen but is registered in Spain.
