Macau democracy activist Au Kam San sentenced to 12 years in prison

One of Macau’s most high-profile democracy activists has been sentenced to 12 years in prison. The sentence has drawn international condemnation.

Former teacher and politician Au Kam San was sentenced on Friday to 12 years and six months in prison for, among other things, “undermining the political power of the state.”

According to AFP, the sentence is the first under the new, tougher security laws introduced in the Chinese special administrative region.

The sentence has drawn strong international criticism, not least from the EU, which said in a statement that it “confirms the erosion of political pluralism and freedom of expression.”

China, for its part, says the case is an internal matter, and the central government in Beijing supports the verdict.
