Melwin Lycke Holm's season best is 2.21. He set it when he won his tenth Swedish Championship gold medal in Uppsala.
At the European Championships in Birmingham, the 21-year-old was close to the final but fell short at 2.23. He cleared 2.19 but the miss at that height meant he missed out on the final.
I get a bad jump at the wrong height, it sucks and then you're so close at 2.23 on the second attempt. 2.19 on the first would have been enough for the final by a pretty good margin. It feels so damn tough, ass-kicking and dirty and everything that's bad in the world at the same time, he says.
Afterwards, he was distressed and tore off his shirt in disappointment.
It was the first natural feeling, to get the anger out in some way. Better than breaking something, then the shirt would have been ruined.
Melwin's father, high jump legend Stefan Holm, was also upset about the near miss.
The ambition was to go to the final, no question about it. If he had cleared 2.19 on his first attempt he would have been in the final, if he had cleared 2.23 on his second attempt he would have also been in the final, so he was very, very close, he says.
But this is not the time for any analysis between father and son, immediately after the competition.
He'll have to be grumpy for a while, then we'll try to look ahead.
