"Today's decision is not an isolated incident. It is part of a deliberate escalation of hostile actions against Brazil, motivated by ideological reasons," Brazilian President Lula da Silva's office wrote in a statement.

The US says its action is justified because Brazil has denied visas to two employees of the US State Department. Brazil is also accused of delaying approval of Trump's choice as ambassador to the country, sources told the BBC and AFP respectively.

However, Brazil's ambassador to Washington has not been declared persona non grata or forced to leave the United States, according to AFP.

At the same time, a dispute is also ongoing with Argentina after President Javier Milei called his Brazilian counterpart a “thief” and “lawbreaker.” Brazil has recalled its ambassador and said on Tuesday that its diplomatic presence in Argentina will be reduced.
