It took nearly 16 years to erase the world record in the 400 meter freestyle for men in the long course.

On Saturday, the reigning Olympic champion in the distance (long course), German Lukas Märtens, struck in Eriksdalsbadet in Stockholm.

He won the race in Swim Open in 3.39,96, eleven hundredths faster than his compatriot Paul Biedermann's world record from July 2009.

Correction: In an earlier version, it was stated that the record was in the short course.
