Detroit pressed hard from the start and scored three goals in the first period. Lucas Raymond scored just over nine minutes into the game after a pass from teammate Moritz Seider.
"They came out really well and scored three early goals, and it's hard to come back from that. We have to have better first periods," Rasmus Dahlin said, according to nhl.com.
Dahlin also scored, netting a goal with less than four minutes left in the game. The game ended 5–2 in favor of Detroit.
Corrected: In an earlier version of the text, the wrong reason for Dahlin's point was stated.
