Bergvall has not been part of any of captain Graham Potter's starting XIs at the World Cup so far. Now he gets the chance in the win-or-lose match at MetLife Stadium in New Jersey.
Potter also opts to play Daniel Svensson as a wingback on the right instead of Alexander Bernhardsson. It is also Svensson's first start in the World Cup.
"Alexander Bernhardsson has done very well but he has played several matches in the tournament and I think Daniel can come in and contribute with fresh legs. He fits the profile we expect the match to hold. Daniel played in a similar position against Poland and he plays wingback in Dortmund, he has a more defensive profile," Potter tells the association's website.
Elliot Stroud is given a new role on the left.
"We will need to defend well in the outer zones because they have proven to have very sharp offensive players in those areas. Elliot can help Gabriel (Gudmundsson) on his wing and continue with the same good work he did against Japan," continues the national team captain.
Starting eleven:
Jacob Widell Zetterström – Daniel Svensson, Gustaf Lagerbielke, Victor Nilsson Lindelöf, Gabriel Gudmundsson, Elliot Stroud – Lucas Bergvall, Yasin Ayari – Anthony Elanga, Viktor Gyökeres, Alexander Isak.
"It's a chance for us as a team to show the best version of ourselves. To have a chance to win we have to play the best game we've ever played, which is a big challenge," Potter points out.
Kick-off is at 11:00 p.m.
