The London Stock Exchange's broad FTSE 100 index hits a new intraday record on Thursday after a large increase among the country's mining shares, writes CNBC. Companies such as Anglo American, Rio Tinto and Glencore have a large exposure to the copper market.
The companies rise by around 4 to 5 percent as the US President Donald Trump announced overnight that he will introduce 50-percent import tariffs on copper from August 1.
The London Stock Exchange rises 1 percent on Thursday and thus leads the increases among the leading European stock exchanges. The Frankfurt Stock Exchange rises 0.3 percent while the Paris Stock Exchange's CAC 40 index is up 0.7 percent.
