“With sharpness, humour and great artistic freedom, Strömquist constantly looks at our contemporary world in her work,” says the citation for the prize, which is being awarded for the first time and recognises “independent and socially critical artistry in the spirit of Allan Friis.” The artist Friis died in 2019 and the prize was established to honour his memory.
"Liv Strömquist has a rare ability to capture the spirit of her time. With humour, education and critical social acumen, she makes the perceptions and conflicts of our time visible," the citation also states. The prize money is 50,000 kronor.
