Sixteen people, including eleven foreign citizens, died when the cable of the 140-year-old Glória funicular broke and caused the carriages to crash into a building in the square below on September 3 last year.
Glória and the city's two other funiculars have since been closed.
Public transport company Carris announced on Monday that a tender will be launched next year with the goal of having new funiculars running by 2029. The municipally owned company emphasizes that this is not about carrying out a full reconstruction of the popular tourist attraction.
The future elevator will be new, but the location remains historic, says Rui Pedro Gaspar Lopo, Carris chairman.
