Darline Graham Nordone is Lindsey Graham's younger sister and was very close to him. After Graham's sudden death over the weekend, President Donald Trump urged South Carolina's governor to nominate her sister to the Senate seat - as a tribute to Graham, according to a post by Trump on his Truth Social platform.
Graham Nordone will serve as interim senator for the remainder of the term until January.
Republicans in South Carolina are holding a special primary on August 11 to select a candidate for the November election. The winner will then begin a full six-year term in the Senate in January.
