The Swedish national team captain had not played at all this season due to a toe injury. But at Villa Park, it was time to make his season debut.

In the second half, he replaced Noussair Mazraoui and came on as right-back.

This in a match that remained goalless, and where Lindelöf, after a late tackle, received a yellow card.

We are aware that we score too few goals. In that sense, it's not a good start to the season, we need to get better. It's an area we need to improve, says United coach Erik ten Hag to Sky Sports.

Fernandes hit the crossbar

United captain Bruno Fernandes came closest to a winning goal, curling a free kick into the crossbar. Aston Villa brought in their super-sub Jhon Durán – who decided against Bayern München in the Champions League earlier in the week – but not with the same luck this time.

The big question is what this result means for Erik ten Hag. The Dutchman is under pressure after a very weak start to the season, and there has been much speculation about his future in the club. On site at the arena in Birmingham were the new minority owner Jim Ratcliffe and the new sports leadership.

After seven rounds, ten Hag's United have only taken eight points – ten fewer than rival Liverpool, who lead the league.

We know what we're working on. It's a long-term process, says ten Hag.

National team break ahead

Now, the Premier League takes a national team break. For Victor Nilsson Lindelöf's Sweden, Slovakia (October 11) and Estonia (October 14) await in the Nations League.

There, he will be joined by more Swedes who played Premier League football on Sunday. Anthony Elanga's Nottingham Forest traveled to London for an away match against Chelsea. The match ended 1–1, and Elanga was substituted in the 82nd minute.

In the late match, Brighton turned and won at home against Tottenham, 3–2. Form-strong Dejan Kulusevski played the entire match for Tottenham, while Lucas Bergvall remained on the bench. Yasin Ayari remained on the bench for Brighton.
