Lightning Destroys Historic Crown Prince Monument in Skåne

A monument to Sweden's Crown Prince Karl August's death in 1810 has been completely destroyed since it was struck by lightning in Skåne's Kvidinge. Suddenly a lightning bolt and a crash came at the same time without warning - it just boomed, says Henrik Hollén, who lives next to the monument, to Helsingborgs Dagblad.

It was on Monday evening that the lightning struck and the monument collapsed. In pictures from the site, large parts of the monument can be seen lying around the base.

The entire column is down to the base, says Mats Streer, duty officer at the rescue service, to the newspaper.

A cordon has been set up around the monument.

Maybe there is a risk that something will fall down. The cordons can remain as long as, says Streer.

The monument, which was erected in 1826, is built in Kolmårdsmarmor and was designed by Stockholm's city architect Carl Christoffer Gjörwell.

It's very sad when historical monuments are damaged so seriously by nature's forces, says Marcus Årskog, press secretary at the National Property Board, which manages the property, to HD.
