Six people were killed in the attack, while around 200 were injured.
The driver is a doctor from Saudi Arabia, who is said to have lived in Germany for many years and to have engaged in anti-Islamic activism. He has been diagnosed with mental health problems, although not so serious as to prevent his conviction.
The Magdeburg court has classified the act as particularly serious. In Germany's legal system, this means that the 51-year-old's chances of ever being released are slim.
