Lerby included in the European Championship squad – "Had a good season"

Some percentage quality improvement and there are good opportunities for a European Championship medal. This is what the handball women's national team captain Tomas Axnér is convinced of. It is with this ambition that we are going to this championship, to take a medal, he says.

The European Championship begins on November 28 and is this time spread across Austria, Hungary, and Switzerland.

Clara Lerby, who was called up to the European Championship squad against Spain, takes a place among the 18 players Axnér is betting on and presented at a press conference in Malmö.

She has had a good season.

Improved defensive play

Clara is a goal-scorer above all, with an incredibly good counter-attacking game and a nose for running right and wanting the ball. I think she has improved her defensive play significantly, something that has held her back in previous selections. It's fun to have a player in such good form, says Axnér to SVT.

The rest of the squad contains no major surprises. It has been clear for some time that the injured trio Anna Lagerquist, Nina Koppang, and Mathilda Lundström will miss the championship.

Sofia Hvenfelt, who was injured in the first match of the Olympic Games in Paris, is back in the championship squad.

So are Nina Dano and Daniela de Jong.

Jessica Ryde takes the place as third goalkeeper and Clara Petersson Bergsten gets the trust as Lundström's replacement as right-back.

Establish themselves in the world top

The players we have selected feel motivated to participate and want to participate. There are opportunities after the Olympic Games to perform. There may only be five or six teams that can beat us. That's the last step we want to take. The ambition is that we will establish ourselves in the world top and play for medals on the last weekend.

We have been very close to medals and never been closer than in the Olympic Games. If we find that last percent, we can take a medal, says Axnér, who has based a national team that has finished fourth in both the World Championship and the Olympic Games.

In the group stage in Debrecen, a Hungary with the home crowd awaits.

We know that we have been drawn into the slightly easier half and know that the match against Hungary will be a key match, says Axnér.
