Leo Carlsson's participation in the Olympics is hanging by a thread. NHL club Anaheim said the Swedish star center has undergone thigh surgery and could be out for up to five weeks.

In Wednesday's game against Dallas, Carlsson was missing from Anaheim's squad due to what was then described as a lower body injury.

On Friday, the Olympic hopeful underwent surgery for the injury, which is said to have been to his left thigh. He is now expected to be out of action for between three and five weeks.

I don't know exactly how he's feeling now, but he's probably in a situation where he's processing what he's been through, says coach Joel Quenneville.

We wish him all the best and hope he makes a speedy recovery and comes back to help us.

Quenneville also confirms that Carlsson has tried to play, despite how he was feeling.

Yes. I don't know how long, but I think it got worse over time.

It was one of the things they now had to deal with.

On February 11, Tre Kronor will play their Olympic opener in Milan, but the injury list is now starting to grow. Among the NHL stars not playing right now are Gabriel Landeskog of Colorado, Victor Hedman of Tampa Bay, and Erik Karlsson of Pittsburgh.

Carlsson has scored 44 points in as many games this season.
